I entered a League of Legends comic contest held by riot games. It was very entertaining and a fun way to flex some creative muscle. Interestingly the most difficult part of the comic is creating something that would be funny and fit within the guidelines. The challenge proved to be very fun and rewarding.
Writing the comic is definitely a skill in itself. At first I had Photoshop loaded up and I was using text boxes to attempt to create my story. I soon realized I was a bit bolder than I should have, and reverted to ye ‘ole notepad to iron out the concept. Once again proving that preplanning smart design is an artists best friend.
After a couple weeks break dug in, spending a lot of time afterward detailing the art, and then applying the inks. This piece is probably the most extensively inked projected I’ve accomplished. I was quite happy with the results, but not so much on how much time I had until the deadline. I had under estimated the amount of time to deadline, and ended up rushing the colors to slip my submission within the 5 minutes of contest deadline.

I would love to return to this piece and fix a lot of the coloring. Though, one of the greatest things I learned through this experience is that a commercial artist is expected to hit deadlines, even at the cost of perceived deadlines. Even though I am pained by the rushed colors, most of the feed back I’ve received is that the style adds to the feel of the overall work.
