Imagination in the Illusion Woods

Imagination in the Illusion Woods

Imagination in the Illusion Woods is an illustration I rendered for one of my best friends’ son, Parker.  His 4th Birthday was coming up and though I haven’t had the chance to visit with him often, since I live on the other side of the country, I suppose I made an impression on him.  His awesome and dedicated mother, Katie asked if I would be interested in sketching up something for his birthday.  Normally I quite enjoy giving the gift of art, but it hadn’t occurred to me to draw something for someone so young before, even though I recall staring for hours at a painting in our living room since I was about three or four years old myself.  So the answer of course, was a resounding yes. X-Com – Beat the Night

step-03 finalize
For all those who’ve played the classic X-COM UFO DEFENCE game, you’ll know that one of the most important skills to learn is how to stall for Day missions.  Luckily, OpenXCom allows you to hover over a given crash site or terror mission until the glorious sun rises over the mission objective.  Sometimes, however, you’ll have no time to wait.

This art was a joint effort between myself and a good friend, Kayfix.  Still one of my favorite web comics ever!

If you are interested in X-Com or Open X-Com, feel free to check out youtube.com/StreetLevelGaming Those guys play too much of this game.

Team Aegis

Inspired by the original X-Com game and their alloy armor, I decided to spent a bit of time imaging my team of badass alien brawlers.  I didn’t reference directly the game, but purely went about illustrating the headshots from a sense of inspiration and how I saw a team of mine existing in a world where elite soldiers were trained to go head to head with an unknown and ever-present threat of extraterrestrial terror.  Continue reading

BaseTradeTV Reflection

Though I am mired in my current work, I find that it can be a good thing to take small breaks from the grind to reignite my passion for artistic work by tackling smaller more focused projects.  I enjoy doing overlay and eSports work for many reasons, but one of the them is that it utilizes a generally very simple concepts that can be deeply explored through creative problem solving and intelligent design.  This allows me to push aside a lot of the extra considerations that can weigh down exploration of design while I’m working on such a complicated project as my Indie game Mecromage.

December of last year I had an encounter with a Starcraft 2 community stream on Twtich.tv that I really enjoyed.  Their obvious passion and dedication purely to the community of gamers was inspiring.  I felt this could be a nice avenue that would allow me to stretch a little and focus on quick creative execution of some small projects.  I contacted BaseTradeTV and offered some graphics support for the channel, they accepted.

Art Update: Litte Bot Buddy

Today I did some concept work for a little robot guy.  Was fun, we’ll see if he ends up as one of our little critters 😀  I could see him being a friendly guy, and maybe he transforms to a couple different modes?  What do you think?  I know he’s not too original, what would you like to see changed?

IdrA Logo Reflection

IdrAlogoMascot
About a year ago I had the pleasure of working with Greg ‘IrdA’ Fields on his solo brand logo.  He was one of the most responsive and engaging clients I’ve had the pleasure of working with.  The logo processes went smoothly. Though a bit on the long side, we both ensured IrdA was getting a logo that would hit all his key branding goals.
