I entered a League of Legends comic contest held by riot games. It was very entertaining and a fun way to flex some creative muscle. Interestingly the most difficult part of the comic is creating something that would be funny and fit within the guidelines. The challenge proved to be very fun and rewarding.
Writing the comic is definitely a skill in itself. At first I had Photoshop loaded up and I was using text boxes to attempt to create my story. I soon realized I was a bit bolder than I should have, and reverted to ye ‘ole notepad to iron out the concept. Once again proving that preplanning smart design is an artists best friend.
After a couple weeks break dug in, spending a lot of time afterward detailing the art, and then applying the inks. This piece is probably the most extensively inked projected I’ve accomplished. I was quite happy with the results, but not so much on how much time I had until the deadline. I had under estimated the amount of time to deadline, and ended up rushing the colors to slip my submission within the 5 minutes of contest deadline.
I first created this image back in 2008 after watching a GomTV match featuring Nick ‘Tasteless’ Plott as the commentator of the eSports battle. It was Averatec-Intel Classic Season 1, Never vs Shuttle Game 2 at the two minute mark when a probe became an unexpected warrior. Quite impressed with the probe’s performance Tasteless exclaimed, “That probe probably has Tattoos and piercings he’s so badass”.
Inspired while I was watching GomTV Season 2. I was watching the cast and Lil Susie was getting extremely excited about Reaver harassment. Tasteless was a little surprised about the passion, and Susie went on the describe how cute the Reavers were, and how they were her favorite unit. Her passion inspired me to create this cheerful for all Reaver kind. We miss you Reaver harass, we miss you so much.
This youtube video contains a lot of the quotes that inspired this artwork. 😀
Flash is one of the most dominating Starcraft pro-gamers ever to grasp the mouse. The inspiration of this image came from his amazing control over the Terran army. In my imagination the man simply did away with the adjacent and plugged himself directly into the Terran command framework at it’s core level. There will be no getting past the Last Generation Terran.
I would love to spend more time fixing the background and creating more contrast in this image. I would also like to work on increasing the player likeness. I think the color theory was fun, but once again could be revisited to maximize reflections and cast shadows.
